Spring Break 2020: The Homebody Edition

With all my flights and plans canceled due to a variety of “shelter-in-place” orders, I’m ready to embark on my next adventure: traveling from my bed to the couch to the kitchen and back to the couch. But it gets a lot more interesting! In this pandemic Spring Break, creativity and learning new things rule.

Booth’s Graduate Business Council didn’t leave us hanging. They immediately instituted a lineup of virtual events to facilitate social gatherings that complied with social distancing. The initial lineup of virtual events hosted by my fellow Booth students included: game night, yoga instruction, cooking lessons, trivia, and more. All of our virtual get-togethers will take place over Zoom, just like our Spring Quarter classes. We’ll see how these events turn out!

CHICAGO BOOTH: BUSINESS SCHOOL OR SCHOOL OF ROCK?

If you were at Reggie’s Rock Club on the 7th of February, you would definitely think the latter. That night, half a dozen or so bands made up solely of Booth students took the stage and rocked out to a crowd of hundreds. The only way you’d know it was Booth was from some of the bands’ names such as Frosty and the Beverages, Algorithm, and The Invisible Hand.

Tell Your Story: Nicharee Nithipongwanich

“Tell Your Story” is a regular series that features our Booth community members in their own words. We learn about their unique path to Booth and other interesting personal highlights.

Where are you originally from? And what did you do prior to Booth?
I grew up, studied, and worked in Bangkok, Thailand, with an exception of one year in Oregon as a cultural exchange student, which I enjoyed tremendously. Prior to coming to Booth, I worked in finance (investment banking and venture capital) and the technology industry in Thailand for around 5 years.

Tell Your Story: Omar Chris-Rotimi

Where are you originally from? And what did you do prior to Booth?
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and lived there for a few years until my family emigrated to Houston, Texas to pursue new opportunities. I’ve lived in Houston ever since and hope to go back to raise my family in the future. Prior to Booth, I worked in health & benefits consulting.

Tell Your Story: Najib Jai

Where are you originally from? And what did you do prior to Booth?
I was born and raised in good ole’ North Carolina, but my mother is from Haiti and my father is from Morocco. Suffice it to say, I had a very multi-cultural upbringing. For the past three years prior to Booth, I have been in medical school here at the University of Chicago!
