Prior to business school, incoming MBA students generally take the opportunity to explore long-delayed passions, discover new corners of the world, or earn a few extra paychecks. This year, 70 Boothies (nearly 12% of the class!) achieved all three as part of the school’s groundbreaking Startup Summer program.
A uniquely Booth experience, the program connects incoming Booth students with Chicago Booth alumni who have founded and currently run early-stage startups. In pure win-win fashion, students are exposed to the startup environment and paid a summer stipend while organizations benefit from an infusion of talent.
For more about this exciting Booth experience, let’s hear from our very own Michael Kovach and David Noel, who worked at a Palo Alto-based startup over the summer!

As I sit and write this blog post, I am nearing the end of a truly eye-opening and transformative internship experience at Nestle USA. I am actually one of three Boothies interning here this summer (pictured above), out of a group of four Summer Associates in DC!
I chose Nestle because I wanted to grow my experience in marketing within the food and beverage industry. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked, “Why tech?” or “Why Microsoft?” No, it’s not because the CEO is a Booth alum (Hi Satya!). My answer is that I was seeking an experience completely unlike any other I’ve had before. Microsoft represented the greatest departure from my past professional experiences that I could find.

This summer, I gained my first exposure to strategy consulting and had the chance to see the educational grounding from Y1 at Booth come to life. Which was especially useful when tackling what my bosses described as “the most challenging project of the summer.”
I am interning in New York City with IBM’s Digital Strategy team. Together with the IBM iX team, we offer digital and strategic solutions and insights to our clients’ most complicated questions. I was excited to join the team for the summer to get my feet wet in strategy consulting and to collaborate with the design experts on the iX team.
Also, as of last year, I was the only remaining member of my direct family to have not lived in NYC, something I can finally check off the bucket list.
