As our Best Booth Moment series continues, we hear stories from students about how they interact with Booth faculty outside of the classroom.
While at Booth, I have had the opportunity to take a variety of courses covering the spectrum of business school topics taught through many different styles and approaches by my professors. During the winter quarter, I was enrolled in Building the New Venture with Professor Lindsey Lyman, one of the many experiential, entrepreneurship classes offered at Booth. The experience proved to be a great opportunity for our team to connect with our professor outside of the classroom setting.

This is it. It’s my last quarter at Booth, my last opportunity to be a student and my last time bidding for courses before I graduate in four weeks. Upon reflection, it’s clear that I’ve greatly benefited from Booth’s flexible curriculum.
Not only have I had the chance to take the real estate, private equity and other finance courses that will likely have a direct effect on my professional ambitions going forward, but I also was able to take several electives that helped me round out my managerial education. As I perused iBid, thoroughly studying my course options for the spring quarter, I came to a standstill. While I only need three more classes to graduate with the rest of the Class of 2019, I was having trouble narrowing down my options. If only I could take more than three courses this quarter…

I am currently taking Professor Kathleen Fitzgerald’s Integrated Strategic Management Course. It’s been a bit unconventional – rather than turning in thought papers or problem solutions, I’ve been spending the past few weeks glued to the “Gleacher Game” portal, where along with my team, I’ve been creating products to sell to other regions.

So many courses, so little time! That’s how most of us feel at Booth, but wait till you consider the wider University! As a center for intellectual thought, the University of Chicago has a lot to offer – be it art history, molecular engineering or theater. Being part of the University gives us a chance to explore these areas of study as Booth students are permitted to take up to six non-Booth courses (and to offer some much-needed respite to those overworked DCF brain cells!)

As I sit and write this blog post, I am nearing the end of a truly eye-opening and transformative internship experience at Nestle USA. I am actually one of three Boothies interning here this summer (pictured above), out of a group of four Summer Associates in DC!
I chose Nestle because I wanted to grow my experience in marketing within the food and beverage industry. That said, I ended up learning so much more than I expected: how to work with a cross-functional team, how to analyze a profit & loss statement, how to evaluate food like a true critic, and more than I could ever imagine about everything from powdered coffee creamer to Cold Brew. As the internship unwinds (and class bidding begins), I am left with a sense of what I’d like to learn more about once I get back on campus.
