In business school, you spend a large fraction of fall quarter recruiting, and even more time in winter interviewing with companies you hope to intern for. What doesn’t get discussed as much is what takes place after the offer, as the company (or several companies, if you’re lucky) attempt to entice you with a weekend getaway that will leave you with a favorable impression of the firm and your potential colleagues.
I still remember my first Sell Weekend as if it were yesterday. Because of Booth’s academic rigor in analytics and marketing, I was fortunate to receive an offer for the Walmart 2019 Summer Merchandising Internship.

Throughout the recruiting process, people advised me to keep
in mind the “airport test,” i.e., to answer the question, “Would I want to hang
out with these people if we were stuck together in an airport for four hours?” During
my summer internship, I had an extreme experience of the airport test come to
fruition. While driving back from a client site three hours away, my team and I
got stuck in an 8-hour traffic jam due to an accident on the highway. After a
long week, while such a situation was extremely painful, we made the most of it,
sharing music that we like, speaking about our experience at Booth, and even
celebrating our manager’s birthday in the car with a bar of chocolate we found
in our bags. To say the team passed the airport test with flying colors, would
be an understatement!
I spent my summer at McKinsey and Co.’s Chicago office,
working on a large digital transformation project for a public sector client. The
best part about the experience—the team was made up of four Boothies (one each
from the MBA class of ’17, ’18, ’19, and ’20)!

Following Kate’s update on her Beantown summer, I too, would like to say hello from Boston! I had the opportunity to intern at Bain & Company, and I’ve just wrapped up an incredible ten weeks as a Summer Associate. I grew up in Troy, NY, but I have spent the past six years living in the Midwest (with five of those years in Wisconsin prior to Booth), so it has been wonderful to be back closer to home this summer.

This summer, I gained my first exposure to strategy consulting and had the chance to see the educational grounding from Y1 at Booth come to life. Which was especially useful when tackling what my bosses described as “the most challenging project of the summer.”
I am interning in New York City with IBM’s Digital Strategy team. Together with the IBM iX team, we offer digital and strategic solutions and insights to our clients’ most complicated questions. I was excited to join the team for the summer to get my feet wet in strategy consulting and to collaborate with the design experts on the iX team.
Also, as of last year, I was the only remaining member of my direct family to have not lived in NYC, something I can finally check off the bucket list.

It’s intimidating to walk into a new career (even an internship) with zero work experience in the field. But that’s exactly the situation that I, like many of my peers, are finding ourselves in at this moment.
Like many Boothies, I’m a career transitioner (military to consulting, in my case). Though I was comfortable leading 150 combat soldiers, I was quite nervous thinking about how I should interact with a client. Also, like many of my peers, I like experiential learning in addition to classrooms and coffee chats – feeling like I need to touch & feel a process before I really understand it.
Fortunately, Booth built a course that’s exactly what I needed: Strategy Lab, which is a hands-on class that pairs small teams of students with real clients, solving real problems, mentored by real consultants.
