A Primer on Chicago

What makes this city great?  And what about it will you find most compelling?

Many of you are facing the question of whether you want to uproot your life, leave your job, family, and friends and move to a place you may know nothing about.  And though that is certainly a daunting prospect, it’s also exciting for a number of reasons.  It pushes you out of your comfort zone (the first of many of such occurrences), it gives you a chance to redefine ‘local’, and allows you to navigate it all with many new friends.

NFL, MLB, the Food Network…and Big Data? A Uniquely Booth New York Media, Entertainment, and Sports Trek

Jeffrey Chao is a first year student at Chicago Booth. As an active member of the Media, Entertainment, and Sports Group (MESG), Jeffrey helped organize MESG’s New York Career Trek in January. Once upon a time in college, Jeffrey interned for Major League Baseball and the National Football League, and he was excited to revisit his old stomping grounds. Jeffrey was recently elected Co-Chair of MESG, and looks forward to helping plan events such as the Trek and the annual MESG Sports Symposium, which he attended this past November and wrote about here.

Media, Entertainment, and Sports Conference Experience

Welcome back. We are regularly trying to provide a wide variety of student perspectives that can help to highlight the social culture at Booth and the type of activities you can involve yourself in. For this posting, John Clinton, one of the co-chairs of Booth’s Media, Entertainment and Sports Group (MESG), has offered to share his experience in arranging the group’s annual conference. To provide a little context, every year this student led group arranges a symposium (over 110 participants from 5+ states) to discuss relevant issues and help educate students interested in pursuing a career in media, entertainment or sports. This year, the group had several keynote speakers to include Tom Ricketts, Chairman and owner of the Chicago Cubs and Patrick Benetucci, a President at Leo Burnett (both Booth alums). The conference is a tremendous amount of work to set up but is an incredibly popular event and was even covered by the Sun Times and the Chicago Tribune.
