Travelling with locals – Discovering Lebanon

Roughly 30% of Booth’s full-time program is composed of international students, hailing from all corners of the earth. Over the years, international students have planned “unofficial treks” to their home countries and invited fellow Boothies along for a glimpse of their rich cultures, customs, and stomping grounds.

Before heading back to Chicago to start classes, I travelled to Lebanon with a group of 11 2Ys for a week-long country tour. My classmates, Jad Houry and Stephanie Saade, grew up in Beirut and were the perfect guides to show us all that Lebanon has to offer. We got the opportunity to not only visit Lebanon, but experience the country through the eyes of locals.

Moving across the globe with a family for my MBA

If you have ever been to New Zealand and sat on the beach on a sunny afternoon, the scene is so beautiful and peaceful that it could lull you to sleep—that is if your three-year-old son, Clark, did not giggle with delight while destroying the sandcastle you had just built with powdery, soft sand. Originally from China, I spent almost 7 years in Auckland, New Zealand where I studied, worked, got married, and had my first son. I am pretty proud to call myself a Chinese-Kiwi. Now a father of 2 (my second son Eddie was just born two weeks ago) and a (rising) second-year MBA student at Booth, I live with my wife Taro and sons in Hyde Park. Currently at my summer internship, I am working as a product manager at VMware in the Bay Area. Newborn Eddie is our little California baby.

Perseverance and Support

I was born and raised in Panama City, Panama. I started my life in the corporate world when I turned 20, as a Customer Finance Manager at Procter & Gamble, and completed my undergrad degree at night, while working during the day. I loved this world and was completely fascinated by the complexity, the excitement, the love for the brands, the interactions with consumers, the brilliant people that I worked with, and much more. A couple of years later, I decided I wanted to pursue a marketing career in the health & beauty industry, so I took a job as a Product Manager at L’Oreal. Even though I was in what I call, “the best school for Marketing and Business”, especially for emerging markets, I felt trapped in a bubble I couldn’t get out of. When I recognized this, I made the decision to pursue a more impactful and broader perspective of business through an MBA, rather than just continuing a traditional path of a CPG marketer. This is when I decided I wanted to pursue an MBA in the United States
