Reflections from my first year at Booth

Today marks a year since I moved to Chicago to pursue my MBA at Booth. I remember feeling excited about this new chapter but also feeling anxious about all the unknowns. I had created a list of what I thought to be the most important things to accomplish: classes I would take, student organizations I would join, and companies I would apply to, etc… But as I reflect on my first year, I realize that it wasn’t always the activities I took part in that I remember most today, rather it’s the people I shared those experiences with. Here’s a look at a couple of my most memorable ones.

Booth Startup Summer

This summer, 24 members of the Class of 2019 got a head start to their Booth experience through the pre-MBA program called Startup Summer. Across the globe, soon-to-be Booth students were paired with Booth-founded startups to explore their entrepreneurial function and industry goals. Cofounded by Booth alumna Andrea Sreshta, ’16, LuminAID is a women-founded Chicago-based startup that makes solar-powered inflatable lanterns for disaster relief and outdoor recreation. Find out what incoming Booth students Erich Bao, Jessica Goldberg, and Michael Hull had to say about their experience at LuminAID, and how it will impact their time at Booth going forward.

Ten Unforgettable Moments

We’re down to our final week of life at Booth, which means days are spent hastily trying to sell old furniture, cobble together final papers, and say yes to every event invitation that comes our way.  While two years is really the perfect amount of time to be in business school, it doesn’t take away from the sadness we collectively feel about having to leave this community and most importantly this lifestyle.

I probably speak for most of my class in saying that it’s been a transformational period of time.  We learned a great deal, engaged in new experiences, and made memories that’ll last a lifetime.  But aside from all the facets of school you’ve read about all year, let’s talk about the social aspect at Booth, and what makes it so much fun to be a part of when classes and recruiting take a back seat on occasion (or potentially more often than that).

Perfecting the Ask – An NVC classroom experience

What do you do when you have a chance to present to people who can be connections for you and help you with your goals?

That is what the New Venture Challenge class experience teaches participants in the ten weeks they spend as part of the course As the New Venture Challenge (NVC) enters its final round this week, the businesses that have gone through it have evolved and so have the entrepreneurs and their teams. Those selected for NVC have to take the class, which includes two rounds of pitching to potential investors. I sat in one of the pitching sessions and it was a wonderful learning experience even though I wasn’t trying to get any idea sold.
