Winter break provided me with time to reflect about 2016, a year in which I moved 9,896 km from home (Israel) to pursue my Chicago Booth MBA. This was a thrilling voyage and as a social media enthusiast, I had to share my recollections online (see below). My posts resonated with many who reached out to me, inquiring about this whole MBA-in-America thing. TBE readers can find the topics relatable, so here’s a quick recap.
It seemed like any other weekday when our tiny household received two game-changing phone calls. Within 90 minutes, each of us was contacted by Chicago Booth’s Admissions bearing the dream news: “You’re in!” We knew it straight away; life would never be the same.
Nearing matriculation, we decided on our student couple mission statement: Grow individually, without growing apart. To us, Booth’s flexible curriculum and “build your own adventure” approach provide the perfect setting to do so. Last spring, Chicago Cubs General Manager Jed Hoyer came to Booth to speak about team building and strategic planning, and it was one of the coolest events I had attended all year. Who knew just a few months later, my classmates and I would be watching the North Siders make modern history?
What makes this city great? And what about it will you find most compelling?
Many of you are facing the question of whether you want to uproot your life, leave your job, family, and friends and move to a place you may know nothing about. And though that is certainly a daunting prospect, it’s also exciting for a number of reasons. It pushes you out of your comfort zone (the first of many of such occurrences), it gives you a chance to redefine ‘local’, and allows you to navigate it all with many new friends.
Fall can feel like a whirlwind at Booth. First year, I spent my fall obsessively “coffee-chatting”, “crop-circling”, and “corporate-conversationing” — a strange lexicon of made-up verbs familiar to the 250 or so of us who put ourselves through the process of recruiting for management consulting internships each year.
