Social Impact and stewardship at booth

My name’s Sean, and among some of the hats that I wear, I Co-Chair the Graduate Business Council (GBC) Social Impact and Sustainability Committee with Aditya Srinath. I was asked to write about my experience in Social Impact at Booth, so let me set the scene and start from the beginning…

Spotlight on Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 – October 15, celebrates the contributions of Hispanic-Americans who have influenced American culture for centuries. In celebration, The Booth Experience Team is highlighting students Juan Pagan, ’21, and Alexandra Salgado, ’21, as they share their unique experiences. This year, we are celebrating Latinx Heritage Month at UChicago with a series of events and festivities.

I grew up in the Southeast side of Los Angeles, in a predominantly blue-collar Latino neighborhood. My childhood was shaped by stories of heroism from the Mexican Revolution and weekend carne asadas (BBQ’s) surrounded by a close-knit family. When I think of what Latinx Heritage Month means to me, it is a celebration of all of these things—the elements that root me in my culture—but it is also a recognition of the many ways we as Latinos have shaped our own identity in the United States.

The Pets of Booth

Business school can be stressful. It ain’t always easy juggling group projects, recruiting, studying and socializing. Sometimes the best way to relax is to go home, kick up your feet, and spend some quality time with the one friend that will never let you down… your pet.

Here are some of the pets at Booth that keep our whole community smiling!

  • Joey Barrick ('20) and Katie Barrick love spending time in Mila with Auggie aka their fur baby.
  • Auggie the Beagle poses for a regal shot by the Buckingham Fountain taken by pal Marisa Vavruska ('19).
  • Here's Auggie again, this time sneaking into the Harper Center! Shh don't tell Dean Kole.
  • Elise Hogan ('19) has kept busy while at Booth, especially when it comes to caring for her snakes. Here is BB-8, the Kenyan Sand Boa. May the Force be with you.
  • Here is Elise's second snake, Bella the Rosy Boa, about to go for a quick dip.
  • Last but certainly not least, here is Elise's third snake Buster the Okeetee Corn Snake.
  • Bentzi, Roi Kessler's pup ('19), has become arguably more popular than Roi himself.
  • Bentzi wanted to join Roi and the Booth Right crew in Israel for Spring Break 2019. Here is Bentzi chilling on the beach in Tel Aviv.
  • Calvin and Hobbes maintain the apartment while Aziz ('19) and Nikki Munir are out and about during the day.
  • Lily Orlin ('20) always has a full house with her three pets. Here is Bella looking happy? hungry? excited? Probably all the above.
  • Commodore loves exploring Lily's apartment. No corner goes unnoticed.
  • Hank wraps up Lily's trio. Hank loves his treats... well earned given his two feline roommates.
  • Coco keeps his eyes on the prize when walking with Max Tabb ('19).
  • Jax is a retired service dog but still loves keeping busy with Erik Riley ('19) and Angela Cervantes.
  • Meet Jolene McFurmanneny! (fur daughter of Liz Furman ('20) and Alex McAnneny).
  • Lincoln is so happy spending time outdoors and having deep conversations with Candace Tkac ('19).
  • With all that fur, Moose may be the only one who likes Chicago winters more than summers, but he still appeases Sean ('19) and Lindsay Smith with walks through the park.
  • Pippa the Corgi lives the good life with her friend Christina Bachtina ('20).
  • Rizzo is so adorable and loves snuggle time with Zach Ring ('19).
  • Teddy Fox loves hanging out with the Booth community, reading Shakespeare, and going to birthday parties with other Booth pups (as featured on the cover page!) Oh, and Teddy loves his friends Katie ('20) and Sam Fox as well.
  • Texas was just as excited about the move from her home state... Texas... to Chicago as her owner's Chris ('19) and Sura Giuffreda.
  • Although Texas prefers the indoors, she still loves making new friends!
  • Trent loves spending time with Ryan Waldorf's ('19) friends in MPP!
  • Dexter loves stealing the blankets from Allison Kahn ('19) in Mila.
  • Dexter dreaming of warmer days by the lake. Don't worry Dexter, summer is always just around the corner.
  • Here is Button, pet friend of Gal Amran ('19).
  • Last but not least, here is Paul Veiga's ('19) succulent.

High Growth in Japan

The group trip to Japan has always been a popular one among students for Spring Break. During the week in between second and third quarter, those who sign up for the Japan Trek travel together to multiple cities throughout the country, including Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, and Tokyo. This year’s Trek was a special one for multiple reasons. Read more below to find out why!

Before you click SUBMIT: Thoughts for Round 2 Applicants

I still remember how stressful it was to submit my application for Chicago Booth. Agonizing over every detail, wondering what will tip the scales for the admissions committee, scanning Poets & Quants for insights, refreshing Clear Admit every 1.3 seconds or so—all while working a full-time job!

It’s exhausting. And with Round 2 applications due on January 3rd, I wanted to share my personal experiences on a few questions that I frequently chat about with prospective students preparing for essays and interviews…
