Over the past several years, Booth has invested significantly in many areas of concentration outside of the traditional finance field. The Kilts Center for Marketing is one of the great beneficiaries of that effort. In addition to sponsoring research and strengthening the marketing curriculum, Kilts invites top industry leaders to campus to share their experience with Booth students firsthand. Cognizant of the growing interest in the technology industry, the Kilts Center for Marketing invited an industry powerhouse that epitomizes marketing success and leadership in the technology industry: Gary Briggs, the Chief Marketing Officer at Facebook.
On Monday morning the University of Chicago came together in the Harper Center to congratulate and toast Professor Richard Thaler, who had just been awarded the 2017 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Professor Thaler is widely known as the “father of behavioral economics” for pioneering the field that pairs traditional economics with human psychology to better understand how people make decisions. Every year, around 400 First Years (1Ys) go on a Random Walk with a group of classmates they will have just met for the first time. The international excursions combine cultural experiences, nightlife, relaxation, and outdoor adventures to flex Boothies out of their comfort zone and offer opportunities to form lasting friendships (fellow TBEer Eli and I both went on the Mystery Random Walk our first year).
Each group of 12-14 1Ys is accompanied by four Second Year trip leaders (~120 from the entire 2Y class). While some of our classmates may think we leaders just can’t let go of our first year—after going to work this summer, I never want school to end—and want to relive our adventures from last year; I can assure you a little more goes into guiding the experience than just doing another random Random Walk.
This #TBT is a throwback to Booth Follies—a show organized, produced and performed by Booth students. Follies is everything you’d imagine—punny skits, hilarious short movies, and extraordinary performances. Boothies get the opportunity to step outside their case studies, their financial models, and their cover letters to showcase their artistic abilities.
As a dancer and choreographer in the show myself, I loved the new community of Boothies I was able to create through the practices, rehearsals, and show. The range of our experiences ran the gamut—from competitive dancers to people who were stepping on stage for the first time in their lives! The diversity and talent in the class was nothing short of incredible.

It’s intimidating to walk into a new career (even an internship) with zero work experience in the field. But that’s exactly the situation that I, like many of my peers, are finding ourselves in at this moment.
Like many Boothies, I’m a career transitioner (military to consulting, in my case). Though I was comfortable leading 150 combat soldiers, I was quite nervous thinking about how I should interact with a client. Also, like many of my peers, I like experiential learning in addition to classrooms and coffee chats – feeling like I need to touch & feel a process before I really understand it.
Fortunately, Booth built a course that’s exactly what I needed: Strategy Lab, which is a hands-on class that pairs small teams of students with real clients, solving real problems, mentored by real consultants.
