It’s that time of year. In true pay-it-forward fashion, second years are meeting up with first years for a ton of “coffee chats” to talk recruiting, summer internships, and all things Booth. After sitting on both sides, I know two things for sure: there aren’t enough tables in the Winter Garden for all ~1100 of us, and every chat is better with good food and drinks.
If you’re looking for a change of scenery, here are my top five Hyde Park meet-up locations, all within walking distance from the Harper Center.

We’re loving fall on campus right now, but today we’re flashing back two months to where it all began for the Class of 2020: Random Walk. Check out some of the greatest shots captured on Instagram from Booth’s 31 August 2018 trips across the world!
This year, before descending on Hyde Park for a month of Orientation, 420+ incoming students joined 100+ second-year leaders to trek across the world and kick off their Booth experiences with epic week-long trips. Who wouldn’t want to start b-school hiking the Inca Trail, riding camels in Morocco, or kayaking the Aegean in Santorini? Boothies went everywhere from South Africa to Indonesia to Iceland, and for the second year in a row, a new service-focused trip in New Orleans was a big success.
Spoiler alert: the 2018 Mystery Trip was Slovenia!

Between all the fall events and winter/spring meet-ups, I’d even been in the Bain office multiple times before my first day of work.
But despite Booth’s and Bain’s diligence to prepare our expectations, I still underestimated three aspects of the summer intern experience: the substance of the work I’d do, the fun we could have even back in the real (working) world, and how much my Booth network and first-year experience mattered.

I’m from Chicago—from a proud UChicago family—and went to undergrad at Northwestern for Journalism. After college, I moved to Baltimore and joined Teach For America. I loved the excitement and challenge of work in urban schools, but realized after a few years I was more interested in the problem solving in a tough environment than the actual classroom teaching. I moved back to Chicago and became heavily involved in improving math programming in schools around the city.
That experience cemented my understanding that what I really enjoyed was leading a team, analyzing and improving processes, and capturing data to measure progress. Coming to Booth helped me land a consulting internship at Bain for the summer. I couldn’t be more grateful for the community and the Booth Experience that helped me get my dream career on track.
