In the catalog of skills I expected to learn in business school, acting was pretty low on the list. Coming into Booth, I knew there were opportunities to watch my more inclined classmates perform—future SNLers in Follies or the next American Idol in Battle of the Bands—but I didn’t expect that the entire first year class would qualify for an IMDB entry.
I first heard of Golden Gargoyles, Booth’s annual film competition, during orientation. Serving as the culmination to our LEADership class, each cohort of sixty was tasked with putting together a 6-minute movie about our experience. The student body would vote on the best film and our efforts would be celebrated at an awards show hosted by our leadership class facilitators.
Going into the process, I thought I’d make a cameo or two (was a home movie darling back in the day) and meet a few new cohort-mates, but like many things in b-school, I was pleasantly surprised by what I actually got from the experience. From our first script brainstorming meetings to reviewing unedited footage with the chairs, I never thought I’d add cinéma vérité to my list of skills. It was a great experience to work with and see everyone outside of their classroom and recruiting personas!
After watching all of the films and voting on the most funny/least tragic, it was time to head to the show!
Here’s a quick run through of the night:
After a night of great company, hearty laughs, and impressive performances and films, I’m inspired to keep bonding with my cohort through creative mediums and hey, maybe even applying to be a LEAD class facilitator next year to pay it forward to the Class of 2019. Hope to see you all there!
