Rediscovering My Roots: Study Abroad at Peking University

Guest blog by Cheng Xi Duan

I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, the top business school in China, during the Fall of 2024. My decision to study in China was deeply personal, rooted in my heritage and upbringing. I was born in Warsaw, Poland, but spent my early childhood in China before returning to Poland for middle and high school. Seeking further academic and cultural growth, I later moved to the United States for my university education. Because I had never lived in China as an adult, I wanted to fully immerse myself in the culture, reconnect with my roots, and experience the dynamic environment firsthand.

Fortunately, I was able to adapt quickly since I did not face language barriers, but what surprised me the most was how advanced China’s technology was, particularly the widespread use of WeChat, which made daily life extremely convenient. Experiencing China’s technological advancements firsthand deepened my curiosity about the broader forces driving China’s development and reinforced my eagerness to study its economy, politics, and business landscape. China’s rapid economic growth and development also made it an ideal place to study, as I was eager to learn from esteemed Chinese professors about the country’s economy, politics, and business landscape. This experience promised not only academic enrichment but also personal and cultural growth.

During my time at Peking University, I enrolled in three courses: Organizational Design, Brand Management, and Chinese Leadership. Each class provided me with invaluable insights into how organizations are structured in China, the unique approaches to conducting business, and the leadership styles prevalent in Chinese corporations. Many of these concepts were entirely new to me, making the learning process both captivating and intellectually stimulating. One of the most thought-provoking experiences was in my Organizational Design class, where the professor drew comparisons between historical Chinese dynasties and modern-day China’s political structures. He analyzed how the hierarchical layers in each dynasty influenced today’s governance, highlighting both advantages and disadvantages through historical evidence and concrete examples. This historical perspective enriched my understanding of contemporary China in ways I had never imagined, allowing me to view its development through a deeper and more analytical lens.

Beyond my formal coursework, I also audited several classes that piqued my interest. A sociology course on suicide explored the reasons behind these tragedies and potential preventive measures. A Confucian philosophy class delved into moral values and the principles of becoming an ethical person. An economic history course traced the evolution of economies from the Roman Empire to the present. Additionally, I attended a lecture by the renowned economist Justin Yifu Lin, who provided an in-depth analysis of economic growth and the future prospects of Southeast Asia, offering a comparative perspective on China’s role in the region. These diverse subjects broadened my intellectual horizons and exposed me to perspectives I might not have otherwise encountered. Studying alongside my Chinese classmates was an equally enriching experience. I truly enjoyed engaging in discussions with them, as their viewpoints and ways of thinking often challenged my own perspectives, deepening my appreciation for different approaches to learning and problem-solving. The opportunity to explore such a wide range of topics was truly exhilarating and deepened my understanding of China’s economic strategies, historical governance models, and cultural philosophies. It provided me with a comprehensive perspective on how these factors influence modern Chinese society and its global standing.

Peking University also provided numerous social and cultural opportunities for exchange students to engage with the local environment. During orientation, the university organized a trip to the Great Wall, allowing us to bond with fellow students while experiencing one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. In September, we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with traditional Chinese games, arts and crafts, and captivating performances, deepening our appreciation for Chinese culture. Another highlight was the Guanghua Fall Run, where nearly a hundred students participated in a scenic race around the 680-acre campus. These events not only enriched our cultural experience but also fostered meaningful connections with peers from diverse backgrounds, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Living in China was an incredible experience—I loved the vibrant atmosphere, the food, and the energy of the cities. Every day felt like an adventure, as I immersed myself in the local culture by participating in traditional festivals, savoring authentic regional cuisines, and engaging in customs.

My study abroad experience at Peking University was truly transformative and far exceeded my expectations. It was a journey of academic discovery, cultural immersion, and personal growth. I am grateful to Booth for providing me with the opportunity to fulfill my dream of living and studying in China. This experience has left an indelible mark on me, reinforcing my global perspective and deepening my understanding of my heritage. I will cherish these memories and lessons for years to come.
