The University of Chicago is well-known for its rich economics program, producing rigorous academic research and six current Nobel Laureates (#notsohumblebrag). However, it’s not all just academia here. Steven Levitt, of Freakonomics fame, has been a professor at the University of Chicago since 1997. Levitt has arguably been the most publicly influential economist in the last 20 years through his best-selling popular economics literature, blog, and podcast.
A few weeks ago, through the Becker Brown Bag series, Levitt discussed a Booth student’s favorite topic—data—and how modern data science has introduced new approaches to data not traditionally seen in economics. Furthermore, Levitt introduced to the audience his next big project with ambitions to tangibly change the world.
The Leadership Effectiveness and Development (LEAD) program is an experiential learning course that all Booth students take when they arrive on campus. The program starts alongside Orientation and extends into the first quarter. The lessons from LEAD are meant to guide students through their continued development at Booth and beyond. If you asked people what is Booth’s predominant concentration, you would likely get an answer like Finance or Economics. With the award-winning faculty in each of those departments and the history of the University of Chicago, it’s not hard to understand why. But many are surprised to find that the most popular concentration chosen by Boothies is actually Entrepreneurship. Read more to find out why.
As I sit and write this blog post, I am nearing the end of a truly eye-opening and transformative internship experience at Nestle USA. I am actually one of three Boothies interning here this summer (pictured above), out of a group of four Summer Associates in DC!
I chose Nestle because I wanted to grow my experience in marketing within the food and beverage industry. That said, I ended up learning so much more than I expected: how to work with a cross-functional team, how to analyze a profit & loss statement, how to evaluate food like a true critic, and more than I could ever imagine about everything from powdered coffee creamer to Cold Brew. As the internship unwinds (and class bidding begins), I am left with a sense of what I’d like to learn more about once I get back on campus.
