Discovering Impact Investing at Booth

Discovering Impact Investing at Booth

Guest blog by Michelle Zhang

Before coming to Booth, I had no idea that impact investing existed. My first introduction came during an info session hosted by the Booth Impact Investing Group, and it opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about investments.

To me, impact investing is about aligning financial returns with social and environmental good. It’s about supporting businesses that embed impact into their core models, creating a future where profitability and purpose thrive together.

Why Impact Investing?

Impact investing resonated with me because it offers a sustainable approach to societal change. Unlike philanthropy, which often expects little to no financial return, or traditional investing, which doesn’t intentionally embed social impact, impact investing strikes a powerful balance. It reinvests capital to generate not just financial growth but also measurable societal outcomes.

My Journey into Impact Investing

My first quarter at Booth kickstarted my journey with a class on impact investing, taught by Priya Parrish, Chief Investment Officer at Impact Engine. Her passion for advancing this relatively nascent field was infectious. Guest speakers from the sector further reinforced how intentional, mission-driven investments can address pressing societal challenges while generating financial returns. I have also taken other courses related to social impact, such as Social Sector Strategy and Structure as well as Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation, both of which have strong ties to impact investing.

Eager to dive deeper, I joined the Booth Impact Investing Group and the Steven Tarrson Impact Investment Fund as an Investment Associate. I focused on the health equity pillar, sourcing startups in areas like maternal and mental health—areas I’m deeply passionate about. Engaging with founders, understanding their businesses, and pitching to the investment committee were invaluable experiences.

Leading and Growing the Impact Investing Community

In my second year, I’ve taken on leadership roles as Co-Chair of BII and Managing Partner of the Tarrson Fund. These roles have allowed me to grow our impact investing community at Booth. Recently, we recruited our next cohort of Investment Associates and have exciting plans for the community, including educational workshops and social events to deepen engagement in the impact investing space.

A Path Forward

Impact investing has transformed how I view the role of business in addressing societal challenges. Booth provided not just the knowledge but also the platform to actively engage in this field. I’m excited to continue building this community and exploring how intentional investments can shape a better future.
